Kim & me working on cardio.

Over the last ten years the importance of fitness in golf has been highlighted by the top professionals such as Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam. I find that keeping fit not only strengthens my game and my ability to stay focused even at the end of a tough tournament but it also makes me feel better generally.

Working out at the IMG Academy Performance Institute has really helped me to improve my strength as a golfer. Coach Trevor Anderson has formulated a plan for my group of Post Graduate students that really enables us to find our next level of fitness. There aren't many differences between my fitness regime in the States and back in the UK but what is motivational for me is working with a group of athletes who are constantly trying to improve - this really pushes me on.

Whilst I was back home in the UK at Christmas I had a number of sessions with my fitness coach Kim Roberts from DR Physiotherapy, we spent a lot of time working on my cardio. I am certainly much stronger now but I have to plan my exercise well to make sure that I don't miss out due to the pressure of tournaments - riding on a buggy in the States certainly isn't good for your general fitness so I will have to put in some extra cardio workouts to make up for this.

As you can see from these images I like to use a gym ball to work on my core - Kim is ultra fit so she gives me some challenging exercises but they are always designed around my fitness for golf so I know that they are doing the job. If you are considering improving your fitness for golf - I would advise you to visit a trainer that has a background in golf as doing the wrong exercises can be pretty pointless and frustrating.

In golf it is difficult to keep a balance between practice, exercise, tournament preparation and keeping in touch with my family and friends. I don't always get it right but it is important to stay fresh in all areas of your life - I'm still working on getting it right!

Hydration and Nutrition, both on and off the golf course are also very important. making sure that you have the correct fuel in your body to keep you going for 18 or 36 holes can sometimes be a challenge but this is really important to your well being and your performance. People that know me, will have noticed that I am always snacking on the golf course! Healthy snacks are the answer, fruit, nuts and cereal bars are my favourite but always check the fat content to make sure that you're not overloading on the calories and there are some fantastic energy drinks on the market that will keep your system in shape for the duration of your round.

In January 2010 I will be returning to the IMG Academy and coach TA (Trevor Anderson) will be eagerly waiting my arrival. No doubt he will have some exciting new exercises to challenge my group with! Click on the video box below to take a look at a video of Golf Trevor Anderson Style!
